Up next on the Chutney series is a recipe that I learnt from my mom. This is my go to recipe when I run out of veggies to make any side dish for chapathis / rotis.
Toor Dal Chutney – Yes, you heard it right ! A protein filled chutney that is absolutely delicious and an amazing combination with not only dosas / idlis but also with chapathis 🙂
Here is the recipe 🙂
INGREDIENTS:
Toor Dal / Togari bele – 1/2 cup
Dry red chillies – 2 (or more if you need the chutney more spicy)
Powdered Asafoetida- 1/2 tsp
Tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp
Shredded Coconut – 1/2 cup or 6 tbsp
Salt – as per taste
Oil – 1/2 tsp
For tempering:
Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – few – chopped finely
METHOD:
In a frying pan, on a medium flame, heat half a teaspoon of oil. Add the toor dal, dry chillies and asafoetida.
Roast them well till the dal turns golden brown and till you get a nice aroma of the roasted dal. Make sure to keep stirring the mixture to make sure the dal is not over roasted or burnt.
Allow it to cool and then grind it with Coconut, tamarind paste and salt.
Now prepare the tempering with mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves. Add the tempering to the prepared chutney.
Toor dal chutney is ready to be served.
Serve it with hot rotis / parathas / chapathis or even with idli / dosa 🙂
