Avarekaalu / Broad bean is available in Karnataka during the winter season. This bean is soft, mushy and has a distinct aroma. My mom used to prepare a number of dishes using this bean. Avarekaal rotti and avarekaal usli have been my long time favourites.
After coming to the US I looked for this bean in some stores but never really cared to check the frozen section. One day I happened to find it while picking up frozen coconut. Oh boy! I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait to get home and make Avarekaal Usli.

INGREDIENTS:
Avarekaalu / Broad beans / Val Lilva – 1 pkt frozen / fresh
Onions – 1 large – finely chopped
Green Chilles – 5 to 6
Ginger – 1 inch piece
Garlic – 1 to 2 cloves
Lemon juice – of 1 lemon
Asofoetida – a pinch
Salt – as per taste
For Tempering:
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – ½ tsp
Curry leaves – few

Method:
In a pressure cooker, heat 2 tbsp of oil, add mustard seeds and urad dal. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the curry leaves, green chillies, garlic, ginger and onions.
Sauté till the onions are translucent.
At this point add the broad beans / avarekaal and sauté for few minutes.
Add Turmeric powder and salt.
Finally add the lime juice and cook for 2 whistles and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot with Roti/Chapathi.
